How to Make Distilled Water (DI Water) at Home

DI WaterOne of the ways in which you can ensure that your water is free of dirt and other impurities is by distilling it. There are currently a lot of arguments that challenge whether DI water is healthy for human consumption or not. This article will not discuss whether the water can be consumed or not but it will focus on the process that is involved in distilling the water using the principles of the chemistry of deionized water. The following are some of the things that you will need in order to distill your water:

  • Stainless steel pot
  • Ice
  • Glass bowl
  • Tap water
  • Stainless steel cover
  1. Fill half of your stainless steel pot with tap water. You can choose a five gallon or three gallon pot.
  2. Place your glass bowl in the steel pot ensuring that it does not sink or touch the bottom. The distilled water will be collected in the bowl and the last thing that you want is to have the water in the bowl reaching a boiling point. You should therefore ensure that you put enough water in the steel pot to prevent the glass bowl from sinking or touching the bottom. In case the bowl does not float, you can put a baking rack at the bottom of the pot where you will place your bowl. distilled water
  3. Invert the pot’s lid so that it forms a convex shape and put enough ice on it. The main aim of this step is to create a condensation effect. Condensation is the process where water changes from its gaseous form to its liquid form.DI WaterDI Water
  4. Turn on the electric heater, stove or whatever it is that you will use to boil the water. As the water boils, it will form steam which will rise and condense on the pot’s lid. This will cause the water to become liquid drops which will drop into your bowl.DI Water
  5. Once you have collected all the water that you need into the glass bowl, turn off the heat and remove the pot from the stove. If there is any ice water left, you may need to ladle it off. Remove the lid from the pot and take out the glass bowl. Remember that the glass bowl will most likely be hot so you may need to use a pair of gloves or something that is heat proof to remove it. Let the DI water cool before you bottle it. DI WaterDI Water

Ensure that the lid on your steel pot is tightly secured so as to prevent steam from escaping. You should frequently check to see whether the distilled water is actually dripping into the bowl or not. The bowl that you use to collect the distilled water should be wide enough to collect as much water as possible.
If you want to make large quantities of distilled water , it would be a good idea to invest in a home distiller. This is because distilling water is a process that can be time consuming. Finally, do not let the water in your steel pot boil dry.
